A Charm of Goldfinches and Other Wild Gatherings: Quirky Collective Nouns of the Animal Kingdom
A Charm of Goldfinches by Matt Sewell is a charming book indeed. Divided into land, sea, and air creatures, the book lists the name for a group of the animals. Thus, we have many Goldfinches are a Charm, many bears are a Sleuth, many ferrets are a Business, many stingrays are a Fever. There are also several other animals listed. Each group is accompanied by a watercolor illustration of the animal and a story about why and how the group came to be named as it is. This is a book to be savored, discussed, and enjoyed a little at a time. I see it as a part of a bedtime ritual for a small child, a final reference to a fun part of the natural world each day. The notes are short, just one or two paragraphs. The watercolors are simple and expressive. There is also a spotting record guide at the end. My only regret is that the book could be longer; it is very enjoyable to read and share, especially with younger children.
