A lawyer who is disillusioned by his life, his wife, and his family; a secret that could tear his family apart that stretches back to the Gulags of 1930s Soviet Union. This is what drives this book, and what also makes it a wonderful read. Gonzalo Gil is a lawyer in his 40s who has not had much success but kept afloat by his rich and successful father-in-law. One day he gets word that his estranged sister has committed suicide and he decides to put away her things, in those items is a family secret that goes back to the times of Stalin and the Gulag where his father was once a prisoner, betrayed by his friends. Now everything is coming full circle. Can Gonzalo uncover the truth before it kills him?

This is an exciting book to read, and one that keeps the reader engaged. It covers the dark days of the Soviet Union and Spain before it became a democracy once more. While Gonzalo does not come off as likeable as first, he does grow on you, especially as the pieces start to fit all together. Not the ending I was hoping for though.
