After Nightfall by A.J. Banner, begins with the story of a newly engaged couple, Marissa and Nathan. The couple hosts a dinner with family and friends at Nathan’s seaside home to announce their engagement. The noteworthy guests are Marissa’s former best friend, Lauren, who is there with her husband, and Nathan’s brother and wife. Everyone at dinner acts thrilled with the news, except for Nathan’s daughter Anna, who appears to be apprehensive about adding to her broken family. Lauren appears to be “off” during the party, and to everyone’s shock, is found dead at the bottom of a cliff the next morning! Marissa is horrified and works on her own to figure out what exactly happened to her ex-best friend.
I tend to get engrossed in the books I read, and this one was no exception. While the storyline played out like many other psychological thrillers/murder mysteries I have read, it was still unique and had the right twists to make it unpredictable. Banner touched on many problems that plague society and families, such as infidelity, physical and emotional abuse, and poor communication. This read like a darker book, so the reader might want to follow up with a lighter one next!
