Arctic Gambit: A Jerry Mitchell Novel
Larry Bond’s latest naval thriller Arctic Gambit takes place in 2021. The book opens with the torpedoing of the USS Toledo, which was near Russian waters. Reeling from the attack, the United States sends protagonist Jerry Mitchell of Submarine Development Squadron Five to investigate. What Mitchell discovers is shocking. Russia has a secret base that houses the deadliest secret yet, a totally stealthy nuclear-armed torpedo. With designs on Europe and the world, the Russian president is willing to use nuclear blackmail so the world will bow to his demands. As Jerry Mitchell realizes this, he now must stop this threat before it is too late.
Arctic Gambit is a high-stakes thriller with an extremely fast-paced plot. The opening chapter itself has so much suspense crammed into a few pages that it is hard to put the book down even long after. Bond, a former naval intelligence officer and submarine expert, clearly knows his stuff and makes the technology used in the book very authentic. In addition, the characters are very developed, multi-faceted, and relatable. Also the fact that Arctic Gambit is actually the sixth book featuring protagonist Jerry Mitchell, it can certainly be read as a stand-alone.
If you enjoy Tom Clancy, Rick Campbell, and David Poyer, then you will definitely like Arctic Gambit as well as Larry Bond’s previous novels.
