All of Babymouse’s friends have cell phones. All of them! She tries everything to get her parents to let her have one, and in a moment of clarity, she tells her parents she’ll take care of the television remote control like it’s a phone to show just how careful and mature she can be. When that proves (mostly) successful, her parents let her choose her new phone, and she sets about becoming socially popular. She listens to the popular crowd, asks her friends for the apps she needs, and follows her popularity as it goes…nowhere. How can she be so unpopular when she is doing just what everyone else is doing?

This the second middle school follow-up to the graphic novels about the same character by the brother and sister pair. Babymouse faces the same self-doubt that may middle schoolers face, making her a poster child for the middle-school blues. Like many, she tries too hard and focuses on the things that don’t bring true happiness until it’s almost too late. The mix of text and graphic novel illustrations make this a fun read for those who are scared to face middle school but need a friendly face.
