Boo-La-La Witch Spa
Boo-La-La Witch Spa is a rhyming picture book that describes the rejuvenating spa experience every witch needs after all their exhausting haunting and broomstick flights. There are some bigger words, like exfoliate and rehydrate, but author Samantha Berger’s rhyme meter is spot-on throughout.
Kids of all stripes will love the various “special” treatments the witch enjoys, like soaking in a pool of snail drool or the pumpkin-guts cold mask. In addition to witches, the spa sports creatures like a gnome, dragon, and gargoyle, as well as Halloween animals like a black cat, frog, and snake, though the presence of a giant yellow bird seems out of place. There is no rising plot tension and no underlying theme, but kids will surely laugh at the witch’s grossly engaging pampering. There are also some puns to entertain adult readers, like the magazines Craftsmopolitan and Voo Doo-y Fair.
The artwork is terrific, with little humorous details tucked away for the careful observer–like tentacles coming out of a drawer and a sink with “wash,” “dry,” and “slime” faucets. The bright colors and wide array of spa scenes are sure to please little witches and warlocks.
