Campfire Stories: Tales from America’s National Parks

We rated this book:

There is something quite magical about being out in nature, telling and listening to stories told around a campfire. Dave and Ilyssa Kyu took a four-month journey visiting six of our great national parks from coast to coast, gathering campfire stories from each of the parks. Their journey took them through Acadia, the Great Smoky Mountains, the Rocky Mountains, Zion, Yosemite, and Yellowstone National Park. At each stop along the way, they talked to park rangers (great collectors of stories and some of the best storytellers around) as well as other park visitors and local writers. This wonderful collection contains pieces of larger works, memoirs, myths, fables, poems, songs, folktales, and other campfire stories. Each of these heartfelt pieces helps to weave a tapestry particular to each of the parks visited. Every story is followed by a small piece explaining how the editors obtained the story. Each park section is introduced by the tale of the editors’ journey and something about the park. For those who enjoy stories and the great outdoors, this collection is going to be a real gift. The writing throughout is engaging and the selection of works is diverse and rich.
