Selina Kyle is a troubled child, neglected by a drug-addict mother and caring for a sister who is very ill. To earn some quick cash, Selina joins the Leopards, winning more fights than any other. After one particularly tough contest, the police find both girls at home, and Selina trades her life for her sister’s chance at a good home and timely medicine. When she returns to Gotham City two years later disguised as the rich Holly Vanderhees, she floats among the rich one moment while stealing from them the next. She wreaks havoc in league with Ivy and Harley Quinn in bank vaults and at fancy gala events. She doesn’t plan on making friends, or falling for Batman’s protégé, Batwing, but even the best plans can go awry.

Maas crafts a superhero story with a complicated background. Catwoman is an anti-hero readers will love, and weaving the villains Ivy and Harley Quinn is a brilliant move to portray Catwoman as a villain too, masking her true intentions. As part of the DC Icons series, Catwoman sheds light on a character often forgotten or misunderstood. Many readers will hope that Catwoman shares her nine lives in more books, though they will be disappointed.
