Children of the Whales, Vol. 1

We rated this book:

This story takes place at a point in the future, not specified since it seems mankind has suffered a mighty environmental setback and has lost most of its history. We follow a young archivist, Chakuro, on a ship called the “Mud Whale,” which floats on the sand and not on the water, on a seemingly never-ending quest. The ship’s residents are going about their day when they come across a wreckage, and they go to investigate it for resources when they come across a young lady, bring her back to the ship, and find she knows more about them and their voyage than they do. Then a military expedition arrives and starts to invade the ship and kills its inhabitants, for reasons that are not given in this first volume.

This comes across as decent–not great, though. It is a fairly standard plot, and the characters are the kind you can find in many other manga titles. For example, the main character is awkward but must find an inner strength to save people, he falls for a girl with the mysterious past, and the ship’s resident heartthrob is a bad boy.
