Scott Carey faces a bizarre predicament: he suddenly realizes that he is rapidly losing weight while his body image remains the same. Knowing his situation makes him a medical phenomenon, Scott enlists the help of the only doctor he can trust. When the weight keeps falling, Scott understands that he is only months away from weighing nothing at all. During his countdown to “zero day,” he befriends an unlikely ally, one who will help him through the illness in ways he could not expect.

Though it strayed from Stephen King’s usual writing genre, Elevation offers a heartfelt vignette of the portrait of a man’s life. It focuses less on the substance of Scott’s unusual predicament and more on how he comes to accept and embrace it and how he uses his realization of mortality to instill a new set of values in the small town in which he lives. Though the characters are a bit cookie-cutter, the plot takes some interesting turns and leaves some pleasantly ponderous implications for readers. As it is a novella, the story goes by quickly, but it showcases a new and introspective side of Stephen King—a story where an eccentric scientific phenomenon takes the backseat to an evaluation of human ephemerality.
