Finale: A Caraval Novel
Finale by Stephanie Garber is the third novel in the utterly magical Caraval trilogy. This book follows both sisters in alternating chapters. Legend is preparing for his coronation as Emperor, and the girls are waiting for their mum to waken. Of course things go sideways with the appearance of a new enemy focused on taking the throne for themselves. Then there are the rising Fates to contend with. Uneasy partnerships are formed and unlikely alliances forged. This book is much darker than its predecessors, that’s for sure!
I enjoyed both sisters’ perspectives. Scarlett was still my favorite, though Tella had the bigger part in this story. The Caraval games have ended, which was a little sad. That was the charm, intrigue, and mystery of the previous books. The Fates storyline is concluded, as this is, after all, the series finale. Legend was still a favorite and still an enigma. I love his sophistication and suaveness. I did feel there were too many love triangles going on. That drama was a bit much at times. The character development and worldbuilding were a delight. I loved seeing how the characters grew. I think of all the characters, the one with the most growth was clever Jacks. He’s really grown through the series. I wish we’d gotten to see more of Paloma. The girls’ mum is an interesting woman with way too small a part here. Though this series has come to an end, as all good things must, I do hope Garber is planning to have more stories set in this marvelous world!
