Fire and Bone
When Sage’s only friend drags her to a party, she quickly discovers it’s a trap. She’s dragged into a magical world filled with druids, demigods, shades, and pixies. She discovers she’s the daughter of a Celtic goddess with abilities that may be greater than her control, and she’s being haunted by dreams of memories that she shouldn’t have. She’s assigned a protector, Faelan, who seems to want nothing to do with her. With a week to choose among five deities and the houses that serve them, she has each house trying to sway her with lavish gifts, a dark prince stalking her, and a new threat wanting to kill her. As she navigates her new world, Sage finds an unexpected ally that she may begin to trust with something more precious with her life: her heart.
Sage has a strong personality, fiery and independent but also lost and confused. She’s terrified of her powers and overwhelmed by this vast and complex world with an ancient history tied to her origins. The more she learns of this new world, the more she discovers about her family’s history and slowly starts to find a place for herself. She has snarky dialogue that fits well with the extravagance and eccentricity of this supernatural society. The story flips between her perspective and Faelan’s, allowing for a chance to connect with each of them and to understand their individual journeys while becoming invested in their budding romance. Rachel A. Marks mixes a world of glamour and mystery with dark practices, prejudices, and old traditions. Fire and Bone is a dazzling read with a complex heroine on a journey of self-discovery in a magical and dangerous world.
