As children grow into teens and young adults, it often feels as if they’re growing apart from us. Yet according to Kara Powell and Stevin Argue, it doesn’t need to be that way. Growing With offers parents a clear view of what their teen or young adult is navigating culturally, relationally, and socioeconomically. How are our kids’ paths different from ours? They offer three parenting paradigms and plenty of practical ideas to grow with your child rather than apart.

Our purpose as parents shifts as our children enter different developmental stages, and the way Powell and Argue break this down is my favorite part of the book. Our learners, children ages 13-18, need us to be a patient teachers who invite and endure practicing, train their child up in specific skills, foster collaboration, encourage choice and agency, and encourage reflection. Explorers, young adults up to age 23, need us to be guides who walk with our children and guide them, but not doing life for them. Guides accompany their children as they articulate their own journey and goals. Focusers, adults up to age 29, need parents to be resources, providing guidance and wisdom at crucial points in their children’s lives. Resources exercise plenty of patience, offer perspective, and show support no matter what.

Powell and Argue changed the way I saw my role as a parent and gave me a lot of perspective as my children grow older. I would recommend it to any parent who wants to better understand their young adult child and grow a strong and positive relationship with them.
