In Case of Emergency: A Novel
In Case of Emergency started out with all of the great characteristics of a suspenseful thriller. Charlotte used to be a neurosurgeon, that is, until someone died on the operating table during her residency. She and her team were blamed for the death of a woman named Michelle. Several years later and Charlotte has her own practice as an acupuncturist and Reiki healer. Her best friend Rachel works as a massage therapist, and the two of them share an office. Then, Charlotte receives a call to come and identify a body. Surprisingly, she doesn’t know the dead woman, even though she is listed as the emergency contact of the deceased.
The story is very convoluted and Charlotte is very scattered. She leaves a patient on a table, she is dating a man named Peter whom she has never actually met, and she generally just makes really bad decisions. This book could have been a lot better if the story wasn’t so farfetched. The ending doesn’t really bring closure to the reason why so many people die. A good plot to start, but with a horrible and unrealistic ending.
