It Depends: A Guide to Peace Corps
In Kelly Branyik’s debut novel, we get a personal account about the government organization, the Peace Corps. In It Depends: A Guide to Peace Corps, Branyik states that after graduating from Colorado State University where she traveled abroad, she knew she wanted to do more with her life. While incorporating the travel-bug she had acquired, she did her research and there did not appear to be an abundance of information about applying to the Peace Corps and what to expect during the application process. After her arrival back in the states, she knew she wanted to help other people who may have questions about whether the Peace Corps would be the right fit for them. With each chapter, Branyik provides her experiences and some insight from other veteran Peace Corps volunteers.
Going into this novel, I had limited knowledge of the Peace Corps; thankfully that has now changed. Branyik wrote in detail and showed her emotions through the text to make it very authentic. Also having limited international experience, I appreciated the insight into the cultures of other countries. Her experience helped her to discover a new side of herself. I would recommend this book to any interested at all in the Peace Corps!
