It Happens in the Hamptons: A Novel
Katie Doyle just lost her mother and is floundering in Oregon. When she meets George at an education conference, she is caught up in a whirlwind romance that steams up each time he’s in town. As summer ends, he asks her to move to the Hamptons, where he has a vacant family home that she can stay in with her young son, Huck. She accepts, and her small family moves to the East coast. However, no one is who they seem, least of all George. While she’s able to find work as a tutor, she wonders if she will find love.
Lengthy on description, it is not short on steamy romance, double-crossing men, or rich housewives who can’t stand their own children. To make it even more compelling, Peterson adds a bit of foreshadowing as a sneak peek of things to come, generic enough to keep readers guessing but with enough detail to know that bad things are coming. Characters are many, though varied enough that there isn’t confusion, but they also aren’t deeply explored. Katie’s move to the Hamptons, where the townspeople clash, sometimes violently, with the weekenders, make this a perfect book for the beach or pool side.
