La Dolce Vita University: An Unconventional Guide to Italian Culture from A to Z
For lovers of all things Italian, this book is sure to please. The author has compiled a list of Italian things that she is passionate about in alphabetical order. Many of the entries are related to art, but there are many other cultural references about food as well as interesting figures from Italian history and Italian life. I was surprised to find out that Catherine de Medici was the woman who popularized the wearing of high heels. I also loved reading about Italian coffee culture, the history behind the famous Harry’s bar, and a host of other interesting topics.
Personally, I would have titled this book La Dolce Vita Dictionary because in a sense that is what it is, something that can be read cover to cover or by picking and choosing a subject. Nevertheless, it’s a fun and entertaining way to learn more about Italian culture. If you are preparing for a trip to Italy I can’t think of a better way to sample a bit of culture before arriving. Like good espresso, this book provides a jolt of Italian joy.
