Lakes of Mars
“Lakes of Mars by Merritt Graves takes us to the future and to the red planet for adventures that are both psychological, interpersonal, and military. Aaron thinks he is heading to The Rim for combat, but instead winds up in school on a terraformed Mars. In school, he bullies the bullies, but this is combat school and things change fast there and things can be rough and tumble. One might think of Ender’s Game with this, but these guys are older and they are not looking for military geniuses. The book though does not have interesting things to say about Mars, but that was an earlier chapter when people were there solely for science or conquest. This is a settled Mars with no big scientific discovery of finding life. Instead there is training, battle, and reconciliation.
This is the first of a series, and versatile Merritt Graves also supplies a soundtrack to the novel. The book is a bit challenging, maybe needing a re-read for some. One also might not find a direction in the novel has anger and thwarted expectations. It does come together in the end with a host of characters already introduced and some action set for the forthcoming. This is a new novel set on Mars for those who have begun to dream of fun and adventure there. There is also peril and conflict there for those can survive and want action.
