Murder from Scratch: A Sally Solari Mystery

We rated this book:

Sally Solari finally has things running smoothly at the restaurant and even has a co-ownership in the works but a power outage and a stressed out cook makes matters more complicated. Not to mention the sudden house guest she takes in when her cousin Evelyn’s mother dies of an apparent overdose and she needs a place to stay. When Evelyn believes her mother was murdered, Sally takes on the case and teams up with her cousin to investigate a variety of suspects, but as they search for a killer, they end up in the killer’s sights.

Leslie Karst kicks everything off by introducing a new character to Sally’s life through Evelyn, who has a lovely place in the story as the one who drives Sally to solve this murder, while also adding more to her family dynamic. Evelyn plays a major part in the story as she’s at the center of the mystery but also through her bringing an understanding to Sally about what she deals with as a blind person. They make a wonderful duo with delightful sleuthing moments while Sally also provides a big sister role for Evelyn to help her through her loss. The mystery is woven throughout elements of the restaurant world with angry chefs, competition, and pop-ups. Karst serves up another satisfying mystery with new characters, delicious recipes, and more Sally sleuthing fun.
