No! I Won’t Go to School
No! I Won’t go to School is a cute, classic-style story featuring a kid who is anxious about the first day of school. His only defense is the letters “N” and “O.”
The illustrations are magnificent. The kid’s tense imagination comes to life. For instance, the kid wonders if his teacher is a monster with big claws. The illustrator depicts the teacher as a woman with three dragon heads and lightning bolts cascading from her hands. The bus is portrayed as the belly of a monster. The artwork truly embraces a young kid’s anxiety.
I would recommend this book to young children who may be terrified to go to school or to kindergartners or first-graders who might be hesitant about returning to school.
Though I do recommend the book to young children, I think the rhyming is cliche. The book is cute, and the concept is needed for this age group; developing the story or the characters would have been a better option than cultivating a rhyme pattern. Nevertheless, it works, and I believe children would enjoy the book.
