Oregon’s Ancient Forests: A Hiking Guide
Oregon is known as one of the greenest states in our nation, but many may not know about the areas of ancient growth forests there. This beautiful, useful book not only gives readers some history about the old-growth forests but offers them the chance to visit these beautiful places in the best way, by hiking into and walking among them. Before the forward or introduction, there is a terrific chart that lists ninety-one hikes by distance, degree of difficulty, forest type, and features in fourteen distinct areas in the state. There is a hefty section that will give readers a greater understanding of what the ancient forests are and their history, as well as their relationship to the land. This section is followed by fourteen sections of extensive write-ups for each of the hikes listed in the opening chart. Each section has an excellent map of the area. Each write-up suggests the best season to visit, what type of trees are on the hike, specific directions, and several paragraphs describing what one will encounter on the hike. Most have photos as well. This is a must-have for outdoor lovers.

I’m already using this amazing book to choose my hikes. Very detailed and thorough. If you get the chance to listen to Chandra talk about the writing of the book, do it. Her passion for the ancient forests she describes is contagious.
