Please Explain Time Out to Me: A Story for Children and Do-It-Yourself Manual for Parents
Growing up is a painful process, especially when things don’t go the way we want them to. When we get angry, we get very, very mad and have what is termed a tantrum or misbehave in some other adult decreed unacceptable way. In this delightful story, a young boy describes how he feels when he is disciplined for acting out, and then has to cool down in a time out session.
Written by two experienced parents who are also child psychologists, this dual featured book written for both child and parent clearly shows how the time-out regimen can assist both child and parent to direct behavior discipline. Young readers will identify with the child’s story of his feelings when his behavior is challenged, and the engaging colorful lifelike illustrations will further pique interest. The second part addresses the parent with guidelines for behavior management from their side. Positive reinforcement and negative punishment trump negative reinforcement and positive punishment. These terms are explained but the language sounds militaristic and it would be nice to have some more user-friendly language to discuss behavior problems. Unfortunately, no solution is offered for the parent of an uncontrollable tantrum explosive child in the middle of a crowded supermarket setting.
