Potions Are for Pushovers (An Eleanor Wilde Mystery)
Ellie has her hands full as a fake medium, but her work may be cut out for her when someone turns up dead, with one of her elixirs getting the blame. As if this didn’t complicate her life enough, her two apprentices believe a recent string of missing animals is caused by a werewolf. The behavior of the victim’s nephew keeps getting stranger, and Ellie can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t right. When her own cat disappears and every clue turns up a connection to werewolves, Ellie struggles to keep her apprentices from getting in over their heads and solve the case before she loses everything.
The story has plenty of humor woven throughout, including delightful moments such as a rude awakening thanks to a hole in Ellie’s roof, an escape artist pig, two overly enthusiastic teenage girls, and her charming boyfriend. She and Nicholas’ relationship continues to be delightful with sweet and charming moments. Ellie is independent and strong-willed, which makes her a spunky sleuth, and this brings out the heart in the story. She has strong familial connections that ground her, with her sister’s voice as a comforting presence, her brother as her constant confidant, and her cat Beast as an important part of her life. Her connections to the town continue to grow through various relationships and give her a deeper place in the town. The mystery has a spooky aspect to it by raising the question of werewolves. Tamara Berry delivers a mystery that has a delightful blend of suspense, paranormality, humor, action, and heart.
