We are all acutely aware of the many monstrous natural disasters plaguing our planet during the last decade or two, including fires, floods, extreme temperatures, and other weather events, which have led to food crises and profound social instabilities. In her first chapter of Replenish, Sandra Postel stated unequivocally that all these are intimately connected with water. To write this impressive book Postel has done an enormous amount of research to assemble her material–and not just from the literature; she traveled globally to see it all personally. With excellent writing skill, this mostly academic book becomes a very readable book for anyone interested in the topic. The water cycle is a commonly known phenomenon, yet it’s complex and affects all life on earth. Her book is mostly text with a few sketched maps and photographs (and many more would have added to the quality). She describes scores of examples related to water: acute water shortage in Sãn Paulo due to years of drought and deforestation, the phenomenon of dead zones in water chuck-full of nitrogen, producing deadly algal blooms, and so on. This book is good reading for anyone who enjoys the topic. Superscript numbers refer to Notes at the end.
