Rivers of London Volume 5: Cry Fox
Ben Aaronovitch’s River of London continues in Cry Fox the fifth volume of the graphic novel series. The unique series follows a supernatural police force protecting London from otherworldly threats in a blend of Harry Potter and crime procedural. This time around, Peter Grant and the rest of the Folly play a minor role. After publicly announcing that a wanted witch is under the Folly’s protection, they step out of scene. The baddies aren’t happy with this and kidnap a girl hoping to attract the spotlight. The girl finds herself caught up in a dangerous chase filled with Russian mobsters and talking foxes. Story-wise, the volume is tenuously related to the series at large. It’s a snappy little case out of their files but is difficult to summarize without spoilers. The artwork pops with vivid strokes and vibrant colors and feels well-suited to the characters. Since it’s based in artwork with a smattering of text, most of Aaronovitch’s superb prose is missing. However, fans of the series and new readers will enjoy hunting the fox.
