SLAM! Vol. 1

We rated this book:

When you are feeling down and need a pick me up, sometimes you just need to bump someone off the track to make you feel better. That is the basic message–though there are more–from the new collection Slam, which collects the first five issues of the series. We follow Jennifer and Maisie, who are both new to the world of roller derby and are both suffering from self-conscious issues, but for different reasons. They are initially unsure of what they will find when they join a roller derby team; but they will find new friends, a new attitude on life, and in a way a new family that is supportive. The real test comes when Jennifer and Maisie are on different teams and must face off against each other. Will their new friendship survive the test?

This has a really positive message, especially for young adults who might be struggling at being an adult. And for those new to roller derby, they have a character give us all a primer on the rules and tactics of the game. If you are familiar with roller derby you can skip that part.
