Stand on the Sky
Aisulu’s life is one of tradition and routine, but everything changes during a search for her brother’s missing horse. She discovers the limp he’s been hiding and an injured eagle. When her brother gets injured, she’s forced to reveal his secret. After the eagle dies, she knows she can’t let its eaglet face the same fate, so she risks her own life to save it, and the two form a bond. While caring for the eaglet, she waits for word about her brother and receives an unexpected opportunity that could change her future.
Aisulu is an amazing character with an honest voice and a lot of heart as she goes on a journey, against long-standing traditions, to find her own voice and face her fears. Her bond with Toktar, the eagle, gives her power a voice, and this connection is what helps drive her while giving her an outlet to help alleviate her fears about her brother. Erin Bow has a beautiful backdrop with a traditional nomadic upbringing, giving Aisulu the perfect environment to find herself among these strong familial bonds and specific gender roles. Stand on the Sky is one girl’s journey to trust herself and her family while she fights to decide her own fate and struggles to go against what’s expected of her.
