Temper: A Novel

Nicky Drayden has a penchant for the bizarre. Her second novel, Temper, is a gritty, Afrofuturist thriller sure to please devoted sci-fi and fantasy fans. Like nearly everyone else in their nation, brothers Kasim and Auben are born as twins. Between each set of twins, seven vices are divided between them. Kasim and Auben are six-and-one twins, an infrequent balance that means Auben has six vices while Kasim only has one. As the lesser twin, Auben fights for equality in a greater twins’ world. In addition to Auben’s envy, their relationship is further strained as they both begin to discover their new powers, available to them because Kasim is possessed by Grace, the god of virtues, and Auben by the demonic Icy Blue, which urges him to kill. As they drift apart, the brother’s risk permanently breaking their magical proximity bond that may have an adverse effect on the entire nation.

With unsparing language, intricate and surprising plot developments, and honest characters that display the varied sides of humanity, Temper feels like an attack that is both exhausting and exhilarating. Drayden examines the power of balance between vice and virtue while also offering smart commentary on identity, class, gender, and religion. Although Temper requires a lot from its readers, those who put in the effort will come away with a memorable experience.
