The Book of Irwin Gould (IDG)

Growing up in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Irwin Gould had a comfortable life. His father worked at a refinery, and their family lived in the upper class. They had everything, went to expensive private schools, and lived in a fancy neighborhood. Despite everything, he didn’t feel at peace; his father had an authoritative childbearing approach. As he clocks sixteen, he realizes he cannot bear it anymore and chooses to run away from home.

The cultural norms of the Caribbean are different, and corporal punishment is often deemed acceptable. The author reflects on the blurred line between discipline and abuse. He started living with friends for almost two years before going to New York. There, he lived with his grandmother, who played a major role in his life. She set a moral compass for him and became his greatest support, but not for long; she died of a heart attack. Her work ethic as a nurse’s aide, dedication to family, and proud Caribbean heritage contributed significantly to the Irwin’s current success.

He transitioned to the entertainment industry. He had a solid figure, did some commercials and modeling gigs, and appeared in some hit movies, which he shared in the book. The entertainment industry is quite saturated and competition is high, but the pay is mostly substantial, so he’s one of the lucky ones who built a successful career. His grandmother’s teachings, coupled with his entrepreneurial mindset, set him on the right path.

He reminisces about an early career milestone involving a German brownie commercial. Surprisingly, he had childhood aspirations of becoming an NBA player, and he shared the subsequent twists and turns that led to his involvement in projects like The Transporter II and Miami Vice. He also talks about dealing with rejection, citing an instance during the casting for a major film. The author candidly shares the challenges faced, including a personal struggle with changing the appearance of teeth for a crucial scouting event, highlighting the impact of first impressions and personal growth.

One thing stands out. He encourages readers to follow their dreams and persevere despite challenges. His story is proof that if you continue taking steps to reach your goal and are persistent and enduring, you’ll make it. The Book of Irwin Gould (IDG) is a source of inspiration and an enlightening read. I was also entertained by his stories from the movies he appeared in. I’m proud of what he’s achieved and him sharing his story. If you love biographies, you should add this to your reading list.
