The Dead Ringer: An Agatha Raisin Mystery

We rated this book:

Agatha Raisin, at the ripe old age of 50-something (or maybe even 60-something, she won’t admit!), might shock fans from earlier books in the series. Her veneer of ladylike behavior has slipped this time, most noticed by Mrs. Bloxby, the vicar’s wife who is always nearby to calm and comfort her. As a self-proclaimed private detective who left a high power PR career in London to retire to a Cotswold village, she stirs up trouble again as she totters around dressed to the nines, finding murders and mysteries in her path.

In The Dead Ringer Agatha carries along her familiar cast of characters, among them her ex-husband and Sir Charles, the elusive, unreliable friend and oft-times lover. Unbidden and unwelcome as usual, busybody Agatha seeks the murderer among a group of bell ringers at the village church. An unwarranted number of new victims invites less intrigue than usual and more comedy.

MC Beaton’s style is witty, modern, and endearing. When the familiar, likable Agatha slips from the pages to adopt the more coarse persona of her television doppelganger, one forgives, hoping the expected whack on the head, exasperated policeman, and Toni her beloved assistant will continue to accompany her as she chances on more crimes to solve.
