The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home: A Welcome to Night Vale Novel

We rated this book:

You may not know her, but she knows you. She is the Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home, and she is one of the most enigmatic figures in the town of Night Vale. Which is no small feat when you consider that a glowing cloud is on the school board and a five-headed dragon once ran for mayor. But for the very first time, the creators of Welcome to Night Vale pull back the curtain and reveal the full story behind an iconic character in the beloved podcast.

Welcome to Night Vale is often about the unexpected, and the story told here was certainly unexpected. Honestly, for the majority of the novel, it doesn’t really feel like a Night Vale story, since much of it is grounded in “the real world.” Occasional interludes in modern-day Night Vale (as well as the odd reference, like the wedding set in Franchia) pepper a mostly straight-forward coming-of-age tale full of wonder, tragedy, and the stories we tell ourselves.

In a novel that takes Night Vale to new places both geographically and narratively, I’m left uncertain. I enjoyed parts, but I remain unsure about the whole. Given the character at play here, perhaps that’s exactly what the authors intended.

You should definitely read it, Night Vale fans. But Night Vale newbies, get a bit more grounding in the universe first.
