In The Girl I Used To Be, Gemma is a fairly successful real estate agent with her own business. She takes a prospective client out for dinner while at a conference out of town. She wakes up the next day with no memory of what happened that night. About a month later, she starts getting photos of her kissing the client, audio clips of her complaining about her husband, and photos of her naked in her hotel room. She starts becoming paranoid and doesn’t know who to trust, especially since the client gave a fake name. She’s starting to think it might have something to do with what happened to her when she was eighteen. She is going to have to figure it out fast before it destroys her marriage.

I’m really ho-hum about this book. I didn’t find it suspenseful at all. It was very clear in the first few pages who was involved in the scheme. Also, the prologue was way too vague. It didn’t set anything up, it just made it seem like Gemma went to a party and fell asleep–the end. The story also came across as, don’t drink alcohol and lie and you will have infinitely fewer problems. If you took those two elements away, there would be no story here.

There were no big plot twists or endearing characters, no one you really root for or even really root against. The antagonist hardly gets any page time, so it’s hard to want them to get their just desserts. They are easily forgettable. Torjussen’s first book, Gone Without A Trace, was quite a bit better, in my opinion. If you are going to read one of her books, I would suggest that one instead of this one. This one is just not as suspenseful as it claims to be.
