The Goblins of Bellwater
LOCAL AUTHOR
Kit Sylvain didn’t choose to be the liaison to the goblins living in the woods, which is a curse he inherited after his parents died. Skye Darwen has a fascination with the idea of fairies in the woods, but one night when she discovers goblins, she’s left in a curse that renders her depressed and unable to ask for help. One kiss later, and Skye dooms Kit’s cousin Grady to the same curse, which destines them to become goblins. Livy does everything she can for Skye, but when she crosses paths with Kit, she discovers more answers than she’s ready to believe.
Skye’s curiosity about the goblins is how they get her, and this hits on one of the most overlooked themes of fairy stories: curiosity. A lot of nature and decay imagery is present throughout, with art conveying what words won’t as Skye uses sketching to share how she was cursed and Kit uses carvings to deal with being lonely. The Goblins of Bellwater is flirty and romantic, deadly and dangerous, filled with love and curses; and it finds a cozy middle between magic and nightmares. A cautionary tale of magic that brings to life a dark and gritty fairytale.
