The Ideal of Culture: Essays

One would expect masterful writing from Joseph Epstein, who is the author of twenty-nine previous books and currently teaches writing at Northwestern. Epstein certainly does know how to use words, so strap yourself in for a long haul. This book is a genuine tome, but a delightful one. I have increased my vocabulary with every essay. Never has learning been more delightful. The author has a playful sense of humor and a way with words. His essay titled “Literary Rivals” is hilarious. There are sure to be at least ten essays which will entertain and enlighten readers. Epstein covers topics from Proust to turning eighty. Not only will the reader expand their vocabulary, but also, if they are like me, they will learn to appreciate writers yet unexplored and see favorite writers with a fresh eye. If the line, “Herodotus, like Jimmy Durante, had a million of ‘em” makes you laugh out loud, you are guaranteed to love this book, and you will learn so much from a natural-born and pleasant teacher.
