The Journalist of Castro Street: The Life of Randy Shilts
Randy Shilts was an intrepid journalist who fought tough battles throughout his short but eventful life. He grew up in a troubled home, one of six brothers born over the course of 25 years. Shilts knew about his sexuality early in his life and longed to locate a more welcoming environment. His move out to the wWest coast allowed him this freedom. Shilts’s journalism career started in college, where he received notice and acclaim. His willingness to cover untouched issues, such as gay rights, led to work at magazines such as The Advocate. Shilts rankled at any attempt to stifle his work, leading to his tenure at the San Francisco Chronicle. Shilts left an indelible mark at the paper, where he wrote about varied topics and became a definitive voice for the gay and lesbian community. His coverage of the AIDS crisis was at the forefront. His foray into books would cement his name further, but his toughest battles would mostly remain unknown until now.
The Journalist of Castro Street is a moving biography of a journalist and his life’s work. The life of Shilts was all too short, but the work he left behind is timeless. Shilts’ work is examined thoroughly by the author, allowing for a fair and balanced look. Praise and criticism are laid out evenly, and the book is a tribute to the late journalist. This is an excellent piece of writing.
