The Lamplighters: A Novel
In a remote part of England in the 1970s, three lighthouse keepers mysteriously vanish from their post on Maiden Rock, a lighthouse fifteen miles off the coast. The three men leave behind widows, who diligently search for an explanation for their disappearance. Twenty years later, they’re no closer to finding an answer than they were on that long-ago night. Over the years, scant clues have emerged; the widows have never fully understood what really drew each man to the lighthouse, or what role a mysterious visitor may have played. Only when a novelist emerges to interview them about the disappearances do they finally discover what happened to the lamplighters on that fateful night. The story that emerges alters the women’s lives once again.
Told from alternating points of view, The Lamplighters examines the longevity of grief and the particular pain that comes from losing a loved one without warning or explanation. Through the shifting time periods, from 1972 to 1992, readers develop the understanding that time doesn’t heal all wounds. In fact, time can simply make the heartache worse. This is an excellent read for the long winter nights ahead.
