The Last Beginning
In this sequel to The Next Forever, the main character is 16-year-old Clove Sutcliffe. In addition to her intense fascination with time travel and computers, Clove is also intensely crushing on her best friend, Meg. Unfortunately for Clove, Meg is decidedly not gay, so Clove is doomed to unrequited love. For her birthday, Clove finds out shocking and life-altering news about her family that sets her off on a quest to figure out what happened to notorious figures Matthew Galloway and Katherine Finchley.
Whereas The Next Forever was a fast-paced, high-stakes thrill ride, The Last Beginning takes a long time to get going. The first third of the book is a slow buildup of Clove’s teenage life trying to come to grips with herself while secretly longing for a romantic relationship with her best friend. The second third begins the adventure promised at the end of book one. The last third is a jaw-dropping display of the author’s brilliance in tying up threads from the first book that didn’t even seem to be loose! The ending makes the slow start forgivable, which is the reason it earned four stars. Don’t give up on this one.
