While the conflict between those looking at bettering their lives and the rich and powerful in El Salvador during the Cold War has been widely chronicled over the decades as books and articles have come out showing how the powerful were embolden by the United States to hold onto to power, often lost in that story is how women joined were determined to fight for a better future for themselves and their families while also dealing with gender roles and norms. This book examines the roles that women played during the time of great conflict in El Salvador, which generally stretches from the time of the Cuban Revolution into the early 1990s. It is a combination of history of the different groups and a sociological analysis of individuals in these groups and how they managed their daily lives and lives as women in a world where they were expected to only be in particular roles.

Overall, this presents an interesting look at the time of conflict but I wish the author would have chosen to do a straight history or straight sociological work as each chapter is a different focus on one area or the other.
