The Mutual UFO Network
I didn’t know what to expect when I turned the first page of The Mutual UFO Network. Each story was its own simple universe. I don’t mean “simple” to sound uncomplicated, or stupid, or lacking depth or craftsmanship. Quite the contrary, as each story is startling and engaging in its willingness to ditch flashy trappings or hooks in order to get the reader invested.
Each story is about people. Humans being human, often terribly so. There are love triangles and misunderstandings, deep-seated resentments, and sad moments crushed under the weight of all the words left unsaid. This is human experience boiled down to its most sincere, relatable essence. “Simple” is the word that comes to mind, but it doesn’t do any of these stories justice.
That’s particularly true for the final story in the collection, which makes the perfect denouement, beautifully wrapping up in a bow a work that’s so easy to invest in that it has nestled under your skin before you could even notice. It’s an ending that feels both earned and incredibly worthwhile.
Not every story resonated with me, but boy, did this collection stick the landing.
