Vince Palamara has been interested in the Secret Service since the 1970s when he was growing up. His interest in the JFK assassination has been around just as long. The Not-So-Secret Service highlights the work of the agents who guard our chief executives and risk their lives. In the case of Kennedy, some agents left a lot to be desired. A death of an agent in October 1963 was kept under wraps, and the foul-ups in Dallas were laid at the foot of the murdered 35th President. The book also tells of a cousin of Hillary Clinton’s who is never publicly mentioned who served in the Presidential Protective Detail. Agents are listed from the FDR administration through Reagan. The highlights of the agency are notable, but the failure of 11/22/1963 looms large 53 years later.

Vince Palamara is a noted expert on the Secret Service and its duties. His interviews have been detailed and comprehensive. His work is exemplary and his battles with certain dissenting agents humorous and telling. The Not-So-Secret Service is a companion to Survivor’s Guilt, his previous work about the Service and the Kennedy assassination, but it also holds up well on its own. A history and true-crime book that never fails to inform or entertain.
