The October Man
When a man is found dead with his body impossibly covered in fungal rot, authorities know that they are out of their depth. But this is Germany, where there are procedures for everything. Enter Tobias Winter, an investigator for the Abteilung KDA, the branch of the German Federal Criminal Police that handles everything supernatural. Together with a local cop, Vanessa Sommor, he quickly links the victim to a group of middle-aged men that approach their mid-life crisis may reawaken a bloody conflict from a previous century. As the rot spreads, the suspect list begins to include people born before Frederick The Great. To solve the case, Tobias and Vanessa will have to unearth the secret magical history of a city that goes back 2000 years.
I enjoyed reading The October Man. The novel is fast-paced and action-packed. Having magic be present in another country other than the United Kingdom was completely refreshing, as it was a chance to see what magic is like, as well as which mythological creatures live/thrive. The October Man adds on to the magical universe, not just showing that magic could be anywhere in the world but that the world, and its governments, can adapt to magic. It is filled with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next and how the novel will end.
