Ben Coes, who is known for his series of espionage and political thrillers starring Dewey Andreas, introduces a new protagonist, Rob Tacoma, who appeared alongside Andreas in Coes’ previous books, in his new thriller The Russian. Rob Tacoma, a former NAVY SEAL and currently a member of CIA’s Special Operations Group is picked along with others on an off-the-books mission to defeat the Russian Mafia which established itself in the United States after the fall of the Soviet Union. For Rob, this mission is personal, as his parents were killed by the Mafia when he was a boy. Of course, he jumps at the chance of retribution. However, the Mafia gets wind of the plan and murders Billy Cosgrove who heads the Special Operations Group. Now, Rob and his team must tread carefully to ensure the bad guys are defeated while avoiding obstacles encountered along the way.
Ben Coes delivers a wild ride full of action and suspense along the way. Character development is top notch like his previous novels. The Russian takes the mundane tropes of the espionage genre and flips them upside down to deliver a story that is simply impossible to put down.
