Three in Thirteen: The Story of a Mosquito Night Fighter Ace
Three in Thirteen by Roger Dunsford is the story of Joe Singleton, an unlikely hero. At the outbreak of World War II, Joe was the manager of a paints and varnish company. When his talent for flying was discovered, he was assigned to a night fighting unit, flying a Mosquito.
Joe’s story would likely have gone unheard but for a chance meeting with another RAF pilot. Roger Dunsford was friends with Joe’s son, Pete. After Pete retired, visits between the two friends led to stories of Pete’s father. It was through those stories that Roger would discover the heroics of Joe Singleton. Roger would eventually use Joe’s own logbooks and papers to write the story of Joe’s adventure in the skies.
Incredibly engaging and deeply personal, Three in Thirteen draws the reader into the dangerous world of night fighting over the skies of England. Reading the British point of view, rather than the American, is a fascinating change for the average reader of World War II history.
