‘Twas the Knife Before Christmas: A Christmas Tree Farm Mystery

We rated this book:

In the second book in the Christmas Tree Farm Mysteries series, Holly White faces a new crisis when her best friend, Caroline, is accused of murder. To please her parents, Caroline went on a date with the arrogant Derek, who everyone witnessed her arguing with. When Derek is found dead, her knife is found with the body, and his car is parked outside her house, all evidence pointing to her, but Holly knows her friend isn’t capable of murder. She takes on the case herself to prove her friend’s innocence, but when she seems to have Santa following her and receives candy-themed threats, she knows she’s getting close to finding the truth.

Holly’s main focus is saving her friend from possibly being arrested for murder, which makes the mystery personal and drives her to do whatever it takes to find the real killer. The investigation leads Holly to plenty of unexpected discoveries, including that the victim’s girlfriend likes to throw things, there’s a killer who likes to use candy as threats, and there’s also a mysterious Santa. Her relationship, or the lack thereof, with the sheriff is a constant source of annoyance for her as he’s keeping a secret and become distant, which leads to a delightful stake out with her friend. The threats are even holiday-themed, with candy used in a threatening manner, which gives the story a chilling aspect. Jacqueline Frost maintains a festive cheer throughout the mystery, which is leavened with plenty of Christmas fun as once again it’s time for the Reindeer Games and holiday treats.

‘Twas the Knife Before Christmas is another light winter treat from Frost with even more holiday delights and plenty of laughs as Holly takes up sleuthing again to catch a killer.
