We Are Free, You and Me
We are Free, You & Me is an uplifting poetic anthem by activists Colin Kaepernick and his partner, Nessa Diab. Their message is simple but a needed sentiment during the times we face. With too much focus from many conservative groups and governments on banning positive writings and the rights of every individual, Kaepernick and Diab enforce that everybody has the right to be free, healthy, brilliant, safe, loved, courageous, alive, trusted, and educated. Kaepernick Publishing and Scholastic have teamed up with Know Your Rights Camp (KYRC) to make sure this book gets to everyone who needs this message. KYRC is a multi-disciplinary media company showcasing works by Black and Brown storytellers.
Kaepernick and Diab’s encouraging message is illustrated by Gladys Jose. Jose’s artwork complements the story perfectly. The brightly colored pages show scenes of diversity at work and play. Readers of all ages, colors, and backgrounds can find themselves in the artwork. Whether reading alone or out loud in a group, this is a fun book that reinforces the importance of knowing one’s rights in society. As a middle-aged white male reviewer, I was moved by their message of hope, which brought tears to my eyes. May this message bring bright hope, healing, and inspiration to all.
