What Are You Doing, Benny?
Big brother Benny always says ‘No’ when his little brother asks if he can play with him. Benny doesn’t want any help building a fort, and he doesn’t want his little brother joining him on a bicycle ride. Benny won’t even make his sibling a sandwich. But Benny often stops by to let his brother know what he’s up to, always guaranteeing a tag-along. Fed up with Benny’s constant refusals, little brother walks away. He takes out his puppets and plays by himself. Benny comes by and offers to let his sibling watch him shoot hoops, but it’s little brother’s turn to refuse. Having learned his lesson, Benny returns with a sandwich. This time, when his brother asks if he would like to play puppets, Benny finally says ‘Yes’.
What Are You Doing, Benny? by Cary Fagan, illustrated by Kady MacDonald Denton, is a funny take on sibling relationships. Fagan’s lyrical refrain gives makes the little brother a familiar character, who is annoying yet sweet. Denton illustrates Benny and his sibling as fox cubs, and little brother dances on the page with his desperate attempts for big brother’s attention. Benny’s knowing glances show readers that he secretly enjoys the attention.
