When I Found Grandma
She desperately wants to see Grandma, though she lives halfway across the globe. Maya’s mom tells her she has a surprise for her that’s even more special than cupcakes. Before long Maya is embracing her grandmother with open arms. She soon discovers, though, that Grandma is quite different than she expected. She’s boisterous and dresses in “fancy clothes” all the time. She even puts nuts in her rice and sits cross-legged on the floor when she eats. Even worse, she wakes Maya up in the morning to the sound of her prayer bells and calls Maya by her long name “Mayalakshmi.” However, by the time her Grandmother returns home to her native country, India, Maya realizes how much she’s actually going to miss Grandma and her unusual way of life.
This unique, yet simple story about a little girl and her grandmother is both endearing and, at times, quite hilarious. Saumiya Balasubramaniam portrays Maya as an outspoken, young child who isn’t afraid to voice her discontent with her grandmother’s ways. When the young girl’s grandmother runs after her, calling her name, Maya tells her to “sshhh” and to call her “Maya,” not Mayalaksmi. Her grandmother responds with, “what ssshhh? What are you, a pressure cooker?” Qin Leng sprinkles her colorful, detailed, and captivating illustrations throughout the text. They bring the cultural differences between Maya and her grandmother to life and allow the reader to gain insight into the emotions of the characters. This enlightening story, When I Found Grandma is perfect for children ages six through nine and is sure to be a favorite of many!
