Episode Thirteen, “Safe Harbor”

The finale of Season One ends practically the polar opposite of its beginning. Once despised by all, Queen Catherine has finally won the hearts of not only her husband, King Charles, and her court but the people of England as well. She also manages to surprise them all with an outfit for the theater that drops the jaws of not only the king but all who see her. Rochester laments being put in his place by the king and plans a devilish trick to be carried out by one of the actors as his parting gift. Monmouth is also sour about his new employment in the Royal Navy under his uncle. However, our dear Barbara may be the most affected by the queen. Seeing her with kind eyes and an open heart, Barbara knows that tis better to share with a queen than to battle one. A play and a poem close Season One with happiness, well wishes, and hope for what is to come.

Episode Thirteen ends Season One of Whitehall with neat little bows, tying up practically every story line. With all the scandal, betrayal, hatred, and efforts (both good and bad) throughout Season One, this was a bit of a surprise and a bit disappointing. Every episode the entire season allowed for Whitehall to end with a one hell of a cliffhanger, but it ended up falling short by ending happily. While the ending of Season One was not all it could have been, I look forward to reading Season Two. With that many people living in one castle, nothing can stay calm and perfect for long.
