Wishes
As a family packs everything that will fit into a few bags and tightly sealed suitcases, they set off on a journey seeking refuge from a troubled land. Fear lines their faces as they leave the place they call home and climb aboard a boat with strangers with a common goal. As the sun beats down and the sea waters rage, tears stream down their cheeks – a sure sign of heartache. When they finally see civilization in the distance, their load seems a bit lighter and their dreams more than mere visions. With only feet between them and their destination, they rejoice in knowing brighter days are on the horizon.
Wishes is a beautiful story of sparse words and rich meaning. It’s about fear and hope, determination and resilience. The thoughtful illustrations depict what words alone cannot fully capture. The dark hues compliment the mood, and the minute details add depth that speaks to the soul. The author’s own experience of hiding out as a child and eventually escaping to safety enables this book to be what it is – poignant and heart-rendering. This is a wonderful resource for teaching about immigration and cultural diversity. Children ages five to nine will be touched by it.
